Ojibwe Language at the Chequamegon Food Co-op

Let us acknowledge that we are on stolen Anishinaabe land.

We are Chequamegon Bay. “Chequamegon” is an Ojibwe word meaning “land of shallow water” and it is this place which many of us call home. Let us celebrate and honor, through language, the cultures that make up our land. Our collective cultures make up our member-owned co-op and our local foodways. Placement of Ojibwe language signs throughout our store is an important step toward recognizing who was here before us, and toward keeping their language alive.

The Bad River Tribe and Red Cliff Band are the two reservations situated nearest to Ashland, WI. We would like to thank those in the education department of Bad River for working with us to supply translations for use throughout our store. We would also like to thank Caitlin Newago for her beautiful artwork. Caitlin is a mother, artist, and tribal member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians.

Miigwech – thank you.
