Job description: $14 – $18/hr

Grocery Stocker/Cashier

Purpose: To provide prompt, friendly, helpful customer service and maintain the store in clean, full-stocked, orderly condition, and to fulfill other tasks as assigned, in order to provide prompt, friendly, courteous customer service.

Status: Reports to Front-end Manager/GM

CHEQUAMEGON CUSTOMER SERVICE AND INTERNAL SERVICE BASICS FOR ALL STAFF

  • Provide excellent customer service to our shoppers, making the customer’s needs your priority whenever on the sales floor or answering the phone.
  • Share information with our shoppers about co-op happenings, educational opportunities, and the benefits of co-op membership.
  • Provide excellent internal customer service to all staff members, maintaining an attitude of goodwill toward yourself and others.
  • Help to create a work environment that is cooperative, fun, productive, and safe, and that focuses on solutions instead of problems.

Responsibilities:

I. CUSTOMER SERVICE

A. Assist customers with product questions, in prompt, friendly, courteous manner, referring them to other staff when necessary.

B. Offer suggestions for purchases and ways to prepare products.

C. Assist customers placing special orders.

D. Become familiar with co-op policies and products in order to answer customer questions. Refer unresolved questions or problems to appropriate staff.

E. Encourage non-members to join, explain benefits of membership and sign up new members, ensuring complete information on application.

F. Answer phone calls and route messages as needed.

II. CASHIERING

A. Greet customers, smiling and making eye contact.

B. Check out customer purchases quickly and accurately, using correct prices and departments.

C. Call for back-up as needed so that customers wait as little as possible to be checked out.

D. Bag customer purchases as needed and ask customers if they need assistance. For those needing assistance, carry out groceries or call other staff if available.

E. Open and close out registers following established procedures.

F. Put stuffers in bags, inform customers of specials, membership meetings and upcoming store events.

G. Maintain front end in clean, orderly condition.

H. Issue credits to customers for returned items following co-op policy, and ensure that returns are properly disposed of. Record shrink promptly and report to appropriate manager.

I. Alert manager on duty to potential shoplifters, disorderly customers or other emergencies.

III. STOCKING

A. Stock displays fully without overcrowding; face items on shelves.

B. Rotate older stock to front, making space for new stock.

C. Check backstock when stocking.

D. Pull short-date or low-quality items and follow established procedures for recording and disposing.

E. Label items accurately with price tags or signs. Report price discrepancies to buyers.

F. Take inventories of department stock for buyers as requested. Notify buyers of out-of-stocks.

G. Help with receiving deliveries and rotate overstock into storage.

H. Restock, straighten and water produce displays, and close produce for the night following established procedures.

IV. STORE MAINTENANCE

A. Clean up spills, remove trash promptly, break down cardboard for recycling, sweep and mop floor.

B. Keep shelves, coolers, bins and backstock in clean orderly condition. Dust and clean shelves and product when stocking.

C. Use equipment safely. Monitor cooler and freezer temperatures. Advise department managers of equipment problems.

D. Record shrink promptly and accurately.

E. Participate in periodic inventory counts.

V. OTHER DUTIES

A. Attend all-staff meetings.

B. Perform other tasks assigned by Management.

– Available to work nights and weekends.
