Seven Benefits of Drinking Beer

Seven Benefits of Drinking Beer

By Seth McBride, Marketing Intern

It’s National Beer Day this Thursday, April 7. We’ll have specials and giveaways at the store all day to celebrate. We also thought it would be a great occasion to share these seven health benefits of drinking beer. And remember, the real secret to getting the most out of beer consumption is drinking it in moderation.

  1. Moderate beer consumption can reduce stress and anxiety, which are known contributors to heart disease. Similar consumption can also reduce the risk of elevated blood pressure.
  2. Individuals who drink a pint of beer daily have a 31 percent reduced chance of heart disease. Even though red wine is often considered the healthiest alcoholic beverage, incidences of heart disease in beer drinkers were lower than for wine drinkers. Also, beer drinkers have a 40 to 60 percent reduced risk of suffering from a heart attack compared to those who don’t drink beer.
  3. Drinking beer protects against Alzheimer’s disease. Research suggests that the silicon in beer protects the brain from the harmful effects of aluminum, which are one of the possible causes of this form of dementia.
  4. Beer consumption reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes. Individuals who drank a beer or two daily had a 25 to 30 percent reduction in the risk of developing the disease. The alcohol content increases insulin sensitivity, which helps prevent diabetes. Beer is also a good source of soluble fiber (unlike wine, which doesn’t contain any fiber).
  5. A beer a day keeps your digestion in sway. Beer drinking helps reduce the development of kidney stones by 40 percent. The high water content in beer flushes harmful toxins from the body to keep the kidneys functioning properly. Also, hops slow the release of calcium from your bones, which in turn prevents buildup of lost calcium in the form of kidney stones. According to the Mayo Clinic, drinking beer is also associated with a reduced risk of gallstones.
  6. Beer strengthens bones. A 2009 study showed that the silicon content in beer contributes to bone health. Folks who consumed two glasses of beer a day displayed greater bone density, and were therefore less prone to fractures. However, overconsumption led to bone loss, so moderation is key.
  7. Warm beer is also a cold remedy. When barley is heated, it improves blood circulation and helps you breathe, if you’re congested. All you need to do is heat a bottle of beer in a double boiler and add four teaspoons of honey.
