Local Food is Essential

The #LocalFoodisEssential a new movement founded by local non-profits, businesses, and farming organizations in response to the unexpected challenges facing producers and makers in the MN/WI food system because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Local foods are essential to our local economy, to the health of our communities, and to the environment.

This worldwide health event has shown just how important and precarious food access can be, and how essential it is to have a strong, vibrant local food system. Unfortunately, local farmers and food producers who rely on sales to restaurants, schools, corporate campuses, farmers markets, and colleges face diminished access to these markets and will face financial consequences as a result. You can help by joining the Local Food is Essential movement and purchasing locally grown and made food products.

They are organizing a pledge for anyone to sign. The pledge states that every time you go shopping, you will swap out at least one non-local item for a local item. They have also provided a list of resources to find local foods in your area and learn more about the local food available in your area.

Easy ways to get local food in the Chequamegon Bay include the Ashland, Washburn, Bayfield farmers markets, buying local CSA boxes, and of course shopping local at the Chequamegon Food Co-op.
