From Farm to School: Local Food Distribution Project Makes First Delivery

Highland Valley Farm delivered blueberries to the Chequamegon Food Co-op for distribution to Northland College and the Ashland School District.

The recently developed Chequamegon Food Co-op Food Distribution Project made its first deliveries on Monday, August 27, 2012. The Bayfield Regional Food Producers Cooperative (BRFPC), an organization comprised of 12 local farming and food processing businesses, has contracted with the Chequamegon Food Co-op, a member-owned natural foods store, to supply local farm products to area educational facilities.

A food distribution network helps connect small, local food producers with large institutions such as schools and hospitals. In this case, the Chequamegon Food Co-op has become an intermediary between member growers in the BRFPC and the food service departments of the Ashland School District and Northland College. The Co-op will coordinate, aggregate, store, and deliver foods.

This food distribution project will be instrumental in the effort to bring local produce to area cafeterias. The current contract runs through December 2012.

To learn more about the local food distribution project, please contact Alan Spaude-Filipczak, Local Food Project Coordinator, at the Chequamegon Food Co-op, (715) 682-8251.
