Five Ways to Beat the Winter Blahs

winterblahsimage

This winter has been colder and snowier than usual. Between the cold and the decrease in sunlight, it is easy for the winter blahs to settle in. Here are five easy ways for you to banish the blues and feel better about the winter.

Eat well – We all get in a rut with eating, especially when we are feeling down. However, winter’s seeming lack of food variety can easily switch from problem to challenge if you make it fun. See how many new (but seasonal) foods you can eat in a week. Dust off your cookbooks and try eating a new dish at least once a week. Your body (and mind) will relish the change.

Get physical – Go beyond snow shoveling and get your body moving. Look to activities like snowshoeing and skiing for fun and exercise or take a dance or spinning class at a local gym. Whatever you do, keep your body moving because it has been proven to not only increase health, but also improve your mood.

Pamper yourself – Whether it’s a long soak in a hot tub or that massage you’ve always been meaning to get, giving into the urge will help your outlook. You can also go to an art museum or take in a play to get your mind in on the action.

Learn something new – Whether you teach yourself Spanish or take up those long-forgotten needles to relearn how to knit, picking up a new skill can be a real pick-me-up. Exercising your brain works just like exercising your body – it improves both your mood and mental health.

Volunteer in your community – Socializing has been shown to improve mood, so volunteering offers that and more. Beyond the help you give to someone in need, studies have shown that volunteering increases our health and wellness. To learn more about volunteer opportunities in the Ashland area, visit the Chequamegon Food Co-op on Wellness Wednesday on January 8 from 3 to 6 p.m. to speak with Megan Perrine of Faith in Action.
