Make (And Keep) Your New Year’s Resolutions

Every new year is an opportunity for a fresh start. It’s a time to reflect on what you’ve accomplished and make plans for what you want to do next. Resolving to do something is easy, though. Actually doing it? A lot harder! So how do you make and keep your New Year’s Resolutions? Read on…

  • Consider yourself – Start with self-reflection. What dreams have you been putting on hold? What has been holding you back? The answers just might point the finger right back in your direction.
  • Choose wisely – Skip picking something that someone else sets as a goal for you. (Though if a loved one brings concerns your way, it should bring on some self-reflection for sure.) Your best chance for success comes from choosing goals that mean something to you.
  • Be specific – Get away from making vague resolutions like “get healthy” or “visit family more.” Instead, make a detailed plan for how you will get to where you want. For example, rather than “exercising more” say that you will work out for 30 minutes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
  • Get realistic – Make sure your resolution is achievable. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t dream big, but you might need to break down that big dream into smaller, more realistic steps.
  • Set a timeline – Add reminders to your calendar and create a realistic schedule for working toward your goal. Going back to the exercise example, there’s no reason to start working out three days a week right away. Instead, you could start by working out one day. Then, add an additional day after six weeks and another day after another six weeks.
  • Prepare to fail – Accept that failure is part of the process. Know that you will probably stop and start again. Studies have proven that if we go into a process knowing that we will face frustration that we are more likely to push through those feelings and stick with it until we achieve our goal.
