Unfortunately, cardiovascular disease is the top cause of death in the United States, with one in three Americans dying from heart disease or stroke. Besides attention to overall health, people at risk for heart disease should be concerned with periodontal health. Left unchecked, gum disease may increase a person’s risk for heart disease. Since February is American Heart Month, the Chequamegon Food Co-op wants to increase awareness of heart healthy foods. Following is a list of the top ten heart-healthy foods and the reasons why you should eat them.

  • Apples – Vitamins and antioxidants in apples help lower LDL cholesterol.
  • Beans – Fiber-rich and flavonoid-filled, beans help reduce LDL cholesterol.
  • Berries – Polyphenols in berries increase HDL cholesterol.
  • Chocolate – Flavonol in dark chocolates thins the blood and reduces inflammation.
  • Fish – Omega-3 fats help lower triglycerides and blood pressure.
