Get the Dirt on Compost!

Composting is one of the easier ways you can reduce your impact on the environment. The process diverts food scraps from the landfill and turns it into fertilizer for your gardens.

Here at Chequamegon Food Co-op, all of our food waste goes into compost bins located in the store. Until recently, our food scraps went to Hermit Creek Farm in Highbridge, Wisconsin. Landis and Steven Spickerman used the waste to create rich fertilizer for their organic crops. In turn, they brought their fruits and vegetables in to sell at the Co-op. Due to some changes in the way they manage their composting, the Spickermans asked the Co-op to consider a new partnership for taking our considerable amounts of food waste.

In stepped Todd Rothe of Northland College’s Food Systems Center. Now, all of our compostable material is being brought to the college’s composting facilities. The industrial composter is capable of producing over one ton of compost per day!

If you would like to get involved in composting at home, check out the Food Systems Center’s Community Compost Program open house on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 from 6-8 p.m. at the college. Also, check out Composting 101, a quick-start guide from the National Gardening Association that will get you producing your own, nutrient rich compost in no time.
