5 DIY Frozen Treats

When the weather heats up, one of the best ways to cool down is with a sweet frozen treat. While there are lots of ready-made options available, making ice-cold desserts at home is fun for kids and adults alike. Here are five of our favorite frozen treats for you to try on that next blazing hot summer day.

Berry Yogurt Ice Pops

A tasty and healthy way to beat the heat and extend the berry season. Freeze the ice pop mixture in ice cube trays, and serve two or three in a tall glass of ginger ale for a fun summer cooler. For a non-dairy version, substitute soy yogurt or coconut milk yogurt for the Greek yogurt. If you can’t find molds, use paper cups and wooden paddles or sticks.

Raspberry Agave Sorbet

Sorbet is a refreshing, light alternative to ice cream, but it is so much more. Try it layered in parfaits, floated in berry sangria, or on top of another berry desserts, such as Fruit-Topped Bread Pudding or Berry Cobbler. In this version, using agave syrup means that you can skip the traditional step of making a syrup from sugar, since agave dissolves in cold water.

Watermelon-Strawberry Lime Cooler

Cool off with a great pink smoothie combo: watermelon and frozen strawberries make a wonderful slushy drink. A touch of lime and a sprig of mint give it a South of the Border twist.

Watermelon Mint Frose

Celebrate with this festive, frosty, refreshing summer drink. Craving more watermelon? Serve the frosé with a fun and easy appetizer—skewers of cubed watermelon and feta cheese drizzled with balsamic vinegar. For a non-alcoholic version,  use a non-alcoholic rose or substitute it with apple juice, white grape juice, ginger ale or coconut water with a squeeze of lime.

Dark Cherry Smoothie

Keep a bag of cherries in the freezer, and you can make this incredible smoothie as a snack, or even a dessert. If you’ve got too many ripe bananas, cut or break them into chunks, seal in a plastic bag, and pop into the freezer to add to future smoothies.
